In the classic Indian films' section this week is the Malayalam film ‘Mankamma' directed by T.V. Chandran. It is set in the political milieu of the 1960's and also during the Emergency period. Due to constant harassment by the local MLA-cum-landlord, Mankamma and her father are forced to flee their village on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. The landlord's son attempts to rape Mankamma's younger sister but unfortunately they both die in a fire that destroys the hut. Coming to Palakkad in Kerala, Mankamma and her father find jobs in a wayside tea-shop.

But her father, haunted by the gory past, succumbs to its traumas. The kind-hearted Nair who owns the tea stall marries Mankamma and the business prospers thanks to her culinary expertise. For Velayudhan, an orphan working as a helper in the tea shop, Mankamma is like a mother.

As life gets back to normally, the story shifts to the Emergency period. Velayudhan is now a rebel, wanted by the police. The police, in search of Velayudhan, harasses Mankamma and her husband. The latter dies in custody and once again life is a struggle for Mankamma. Revathy, Nedumudi Venu and Vijayaraghavan star in the lead roles. The repeat of the film is at 09.30 on Sunday.
