2 struck dead by lightning

Nagercoil: Widespread rain continued to lash various parts of Kanyakumari district for the third day on Tuesday.

Two persons, including a newly married man, were electrocuted at Kulasekaram.

Jesurajan (27) of Nakacodu in Kulasekaram was struck by lightning. He died on the way to hospital. Nagendaran (40) of Karunbalavilai near Kulasekaram was also struck dead by lightning while he was walking on road. The roof of the strong room of Sree Kandasastha Azagamman Temple at Vadiveeswaram near Nagercoil collapsed, owing to rain.

The maximum rainfall of 20.6 mm was recorded at Boothapandi followed by 17.3 in Nagercoil, 13.2 in Surulode, 12 in Pechipparai, 6 each in Perunchani and Chittar II and 5 in Chittar I.

Water level

The level in the Pechipparai dam stood at 34 feet against the total capacity of 48 feet, 50.05 feet in Perunchani (77 feet), 6.75 feet in Chittar I (18 feet) and 6.89 feet in Chittar II (18 feet).


Widespread rain in the district brought much-needed respite for the residents on Tuesday. The rain suddenly started to lash at 12.30 p.m. continued for about 40 minutes. Arterial roads of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, which are in bad shape after the recent rain, became unmotorable, particularly for two-wheeler riders after the Tuesday’s spell.
