35 parakeets rescued from a house

BANGALORE: The staff of the CID Forest Cell on Wednesday seized 35 parakeets that were illegally held captive at a house in Chamarajpet police station limits.

Inspector-General of Police (Forest Cell) K.S.N. Chikkerur said on Thursday that of the seized birds, 33 are rosy ringed parakeets and two Alexandrine parakeets. The notional value of the seized birds in the illegal wildlife market is estimated at Rs. 1.50 lakh. Trapping or keeping live parakeets is an offence under the Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, Mr. Chikkerur said.


The police arrested Manjunath (23), who allegedly kept the birds at his house in 4th Block, Brindavan Nagar Extension. On a complaint by staff of the CID Forest Cell, the Chamarajpet police have registered a case against Manjunath. Mr. Chikkerur had announced a reward of Rs. 10,000 to the staff who seized the birds.
