Take a koffee break
I never realised that I had it in me to be a competent TV show host Karan Johar
GRAND FINALE Karan's friends come together for the last episode of the show
Koffee with Karan, has been one of the most successful chat shows on Indian television, the first edition of which will wind up in a spectacular fashion on May 27 (10 p.m. on Star World). A one-and-a-half-hour special, the grand finale will feature the host Karan Johar's personal friends and earlier guests on the show, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, who will be later joined by Kajol and Jaya Bachchan (in her first appearance on the show).
It's a sort of family reunion, more like a typical K3G ending! There will also be a special rapid fire round with India's leading young directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Farah Khan and Farhan Akhtar. The special episode will be telecast simultaneously on Star World and Star One.
Karan obviously enjoys being on television. "I never realised that I had it in me to be a competent TV show host. Getting people to talk wasn't tough. These days actors don't ask me to cast them in my films but to invite them to my show!" says Karan with a big smile. "I am thrilled with the success of the show. Everywhere I go people ask me who the guests are for the next episode. My favourite episode, however, is the final one.
A lot of people whom I love and admire came together on the show. And it has ended at the right time as I can now concentrate on my next film. When Koffee with Karan comes back, people from all walks of life will be featured. There will be a new format, new set, but the same coffee! It will be Kooler Koffee with Karan," he says.
The reason for the show's success was that Karan got the entire A-list celebs on his chat show and was able to quiz them with a lot of chatter and laughter. The USP of the show is the host himself. No other chat show has ever got the stars talking about their personal life. The same celebrities would evade such questions on other shows with a diplomatic "no personal questions please".
Each episode received a good response from viewers. It made memorable television moments: the bonding between Amitabh and Abhishek, the revelation of the rift and patch-up between Aishwarya and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the chemistry between Shah Rukh and Kajol, Mallika Sherawat getting mentioned in almost every episode, even though she was never a guest on the show... According to Ajay Vidyasagar, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Public Relations, Star India, Koffee with Karan has done something unprecedented in the annals of Indian television by becoming an English show with the highest rating in the country.
