dated February 15, 1955: Congress Ministry in T-C

The Congress on February 14 came back to power in Travancore-Cochin State after extending "responsive cooperation" to the Praja Socialist Government which fell last week. The new Ministry was sworn in on February 14 at the Kaudiar Palace. The Rajpramukh appointed Mr. Panampilli Govinda Menon, leader of the Congress Party in the Legislature, as the Chief Minister. Mr. Menon's five-member Cabinet includes Mr. A.J. John, Mr. K. Kochukuttan, Mr. A.A. Rahim and Mr. K.I. Velayudhan. The 118-member Assembly consists of 46 Congressmen, one nominated, 12 members of the Travancore Tamil Nad Congress, 27 Communists, 18 Praja Socialists, nine Revolutionary Socialists, three Kerala Socialists and two Independents. Mr. Menon, soon after his appointment as Chief Minister, told pressmen that the 12 TTNC members had now joined the Congress Party, besides Mr. K.P. Kesava Menon who had resigned from the PSP. The Congress would thus have, Mr. Menon added, a strength of 59 members in the Assembly.
