Film critics' awards announced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 31. The Kaveri-Film Critics'Award for the best feature film in Malayalam for the year 2003, has been won by `Patom Onnu: Oru Vilapam', directed by T.V. Chandran, who has also been selected as the best film director of the year.

Announcing these awards at a press conference here today, Thekkinkadu Joseph and Mannarakayam Baby, the president and general secretary respectively of the Kerala Film Critics'Association, informed that the award for the second best film would be shared by `Kasthuriman', directed by Lohithadas and `Mizhirandilum', made by Ranjith.

Prithviraj has been adjudged the best actor for his performance in `Meerayude dukhavum Muthuvinte swapnavum' and `Chakram' and Meera Jasmin, the best actress, for her roles in `Patom Onnu: Oru Vilapam', `Kasthuriman' and `Gramophone'.

Lalu Alex and Siddique will be sharing the award for the second best actor and Kavya Madhavan, will receive the second best actress award.

The award for the best story goes to Ranjan Pramod (`Manassinakkare') and that for the best screenplay, to Bobby-Sanjay (`Ente veedu, Appoontem').

Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma is the best lyricist (`Mizhirandilum') and M. Jayachandran, the best music director (`Balettan', `Gowreesankaram' and `Kanninum kannadickum').

P. Jayachandran has been selected to receive the best male singer award (`Mizhirandilum' and `Gowreesankaram') and Sujatha Mohan is the best female singer (`Vellithira' and `Kasthuriman').

The award for the most popular film of the year goes to `Balettan', produced by Aroma Mony and directed by V.M. Vinu.

The other awards are - Cinematography: Thirunavukkarasu (`Mullavalliyum thenmavum'), Film editing: Raja Mohammed (`Kasthuriman'), Sound recording: T. Krishnanunni (`Patom Onnu: Oru Vilapam'), Art direction: Nemom Pushparaj (`Gowreesankaram'), Make-up: P.V. Shankar (`Gramophone'), Costumes: Dandapani (`War and love'), Choreography: Prasanna Sujith (`Thilakkam') and Dubbing: Sreeja (for Nayantara in `Manassinakkare' and Kavya Madhavan in `Gowreesankaram').

The best children's film is `Ente kochukauthukam', produced and directed by Sabu James.

In the small films category Madhu Eravankara's `Nishadam' and `Vaikom Satyagraham' directed by C. P. Vijayakumar have been selected as the best and second best, respectively.

Nemom Pushparaj and Ashok R. Nath will receive special commendation for their maiden directoral ventures, `Gowreesankaram' and `Saphalam'.

The award for the best newcomer has gone to Ambili Devi for her role in `Meerayude dukhavum Muthuvinte swapnavum'.

The best book on films is `Nizhalchithrangalude porul', written by Rajan P. Thodiyur and a special mention in this category is `Thirakkatha, Kalayum Sidhanthavum', authored by Jose K. Manuel. The best essay on films is Justin Joseph's `Prathisandhiyude vellithira'. Veteran V.S.Nair will receive an award for his contributions to film journalism.

Director Lenin Rajendran will receive the special jury award for his treatment of a contemporary isssue in the film `Anyar'.
