Game to fame

`Things just happened, like adventures,' says doctor-model-actor Aditi Gowitrikar

MODEL MOM: Aditi Gowitrikar

With a healthy haze of crimson on her cheeks and wind-swept mane, Aditi Gowitrikar is a picture of cool.

Into professions that are increasingly defined by nanoseconds, here's a ramp scorcher-Bollywood-actor who is hardly in a hurry.

"Yes, we live out of suitcases sometimes, but catch up on people and our passions whenever it's possible," she smiles, the crimson turning to a deep beet red.

Aditi doesn't actually give the photographer the perfunctory pose Number one, two, three. Instead, she pauses, thinks about every move before she teases the camera.

And when she strikes a pose, it's precise — just like the prescriptions she gave her patients a few years ago.

"I've seen many transitions in the last few years — doctor to model and model to actress. But things just happened. More like adventures.

It was in 1996 that I was encouraged to participate in the Gladrags competition. To my surprise, I won the crown. Asian Super Model and Mrs. World titles followed and there was no looking back. Modelling assignments poured in and life just steam-rolled ahead. I tried juggling medical practice and modelling, but soon realised that both demanded complete focus. So I took a break from medicine. But some day, I will get back to it," she says with confidence.

On big screen

Surviving her ramp years with style, Aditi, who made her big screen debut with the Milind Soman starrer "16 December", is now doing a few other films, including "Paheli" which has Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.

"Acting is different from ramp shows. It's a lot more hard work. I was a bit apprehensive in the beginning, but the going turned out to be pretty smooth. I consider myself lucky, because I've never really gone about asking for work. I didn't have to struggle to get chances."

Having endorsed so many designers and dozens of products, what exactly does she consider her personal style? "I'm aware of the trends. But you can be stylish without becoming a fashion victim. I'll not force something on myself just because it's in vogue. For instance, when kurtis were hot, I said a definite `no' to them. When I was doing medicine, I remember just taking whatever was placed on top of the dhobi's pile and wearing it. But when I entered the business of beauty, I became fastidious about fashion. Because, wherever I went, I was being photographed. But it's not just in our business, good clothes are important to make an impression in today's corporate culture too."

Talk about fitness, and Aditi goes on... "I don't follow a strict fitness regimen because of my lifestyle. But I can tell from experience, that one can stay fit if one eats in moderation.

Never eat full stomach. Workout whenever it's possible. But sometimes, it's nice to give in to your cravings. For instance, this afternoon, I polished up a sumptuous South Indian thali!"

One of the few model-moms in the country, she says, "My daughter Kiara is my world. She's one of the best things to have happened to me. Children give you such unconditional love, which you usually don't find in other relationships."
