I WANT TO SHOW CHANGING GENDER ROLES NARENDRA KUMAR
Statements beyond fashion have always been part of the fashion week. Remember Sabyasachi Mukherjee calling against the war or Rohit Bal announcing the arrival of metrosexual man. This year designer Narendra Kumar is standing up for same-sex affiliation.
Narendra whose show is lined for this Tuesday says, "The collection is called `Turn Left Today'. I want to show the changing gender roles in the society. In the last few years both male and female have become assertive about what they want in life."
Social norms
Narendra, who commented on the BPO boom last year, maintains it's not only in the high echelons of the society that the change is perceptible. "I recently saw a news report where two girls in a village in Uttar Pradesh wanted to live together despite societal pressures. Taking the theme forward Narendra would be putting the male and female side of a relationship on the ramp through his clothes. "Two female models will walk the ramp at a time, one presenting the masculine side and the other presenting the feminine angle." Narendra, an NIFT graduate, was the editor of Elle magazine for quite some time. Last year he showed his prêt collection Chai but this year he is showing his signature diffusion line.
The theme has given Narendra the flexibility to present both the fluid and structured look at the same time. "It's not that I am compromising on the commercial aspect by making a statement. The male look is more structured with straight-cut sherwanis and pants with cuffs. Also there are wide flare pants, which fit at the hips and then fall straight. The feminine side is obviously more fluid highlighted by the use of off-shoulders, churidars and kurtas with a modern edge."
