FELINE FASHION: A model in a Nanadita Basu creation
She is short, unglamorous and reticent. These may sound as disadvantages for someone at the Lakme India Fashion Week but not for Nandita Basu. Her work speaks for itself. Showing one's work after Ritu Kumar and Rina Dhaka is quite a challenge, but she managed to hold on to her identity.
Media may not be too much interested in her designs but her clean neat cuts, prints on simple western silhouettes without too much embellishments have found favourable response from buyers at LIFW. What attracted the lens men was the unusual make-up she gave her models - some calling them cat women, others finding it gaudy. But Michael Fink, the man who matters, says, "I never look at the face of the models. My interest lies beneath the face." For those curious about the idea, the inspiration came from the Forces.
"Recently I went to an Army base in Rajasthan with a painter friend. There I got inspired by the camouflage they use to hide themselves. It's not a literal copy but still quite similar," says Nandita.
