Chopsticks: an ideal eatery for both young people and families
WHAT WOULD a Sinophile look for in a Chinese restaurant? Maybe a visit to Chopsticks at Hegde Towers, opposite St. Agnes College, would provide a clue. It has everything that an authentic Chinese eatery should have, including the huge porcelain vases, streamers of silk in basic colours, lampshades, and contemporary Chinese mirrors and traditional wall claddings.
Chopsticks, which practically sprung up overnight to become one of the hip eating places in the city, has positioned itself very well. It is neither a downtown eatery nor is it `high place', in local parlance. It is perfect for a family eat-out and the largest table, which seats six, is spacious enough to give good elbowroom for everyone.
For a cosy and medium restaurant, Chopsticks has an amazing variety on the menu. The total number of items in the menu crosses 300 out of which more than 100 are in the Chinese section alone. Due to popular demand, the restaurant introduced some Continental, Thai, American and Indian items and this has definitely increased the number and quality of the clientele, says Clotilda Lobo, who owns the place.
One of the favourites here is the sizzler section. Ms. Lobo recommends the mixed sizzler, which is quite a filler at Rs. 105. For those who can hold little more, she prescribes the Chopstick special sizzler, which is a bigger platter.
What good is a Chinese restaurant without a range of fried rice and noodles? asks Sudhi Lobo, Clotilda's husband who is in charge of the restaurant. Chopsticks has 23 types of rice items, priced at Rs. 35 to Rs. 75 each, with the popular mixed fried rice going at an earthly Rs. 41.
The chicken mandarin rice and Peking fried rice are the other two items that tantalise the taste buds.
The same applies to the noodles section. A special section of kwaithyo is a rarity in Mangalore at least. The dishes in this section are made of flat thick noodles which could be made spicy with a generous portions of prawns, shredded chicken tossed in.
Since the restaurant is bang opposite the St. Agnes College the demand for burgers, hot dogs and other fast food items has flooded the kitchen, says Ms. Lobo. Consequently the kitchen was extended to make room for the American dishes that are popular among the younger crowd.
With more family diners and snackers coming in, some Indian dishes have also made their way into the restaurant. The chicken ghee roast, chicken Hyderabadi and chicken varuval and many hybrid dishes that has Indian meat items blended into Chinese dishes has been innovative, she says.
The elaborate dessert section has also come in for appreciation from the clientele, says Sudhir. Right from the mundane juice with ice cream to more complicated ice cream mocktails in all sorts of combinations, they're all available at Chopsticks.
