Touch of compassion

`Waves of wrath. J. Sasikumar beside one of his works

`SNEHA SPARSAM' (Touch of compassion') is an artist's reaction to the Tsunami that destroyed the lives of thousands on December 26, 2004. Touched by the scenes of sorrow and destruction, J. Sasikumar, an artist, transferred those images on canvas. Each of the paintings vividly captures the plight of the victims and the fury of the sea as killer waves pounded the coast of South Asia. To pay tributes to the victims and to collect funds for their rehabilitation, an exhibition of his paintings, which centre on the Tsunami, is being held at Roerich Art Gallery, Russian Cultural Centre, in the capital city. All the paintings are for sale. Sasikumar plans to donate the proceeds to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

In muted colours, his strokes depict the myriad scenes that touched the conscience of many. The artist has looked at the tragedy from many angles. While some of his works portrays gruesome scenes and destruction, some of his works capture the human misery. Yet others are a surrealistic representation of the angry sea. The exhibition will be on till January 31.

On Saturday, Hindustani exponent Ramesh Narayanan and Sasikumar plan to hold a jugalbandhi of music and art on Shanghumughom beach to pay tributes to those affected by the Tsunami. Children will pitch in with paintings of their own. All the paintings will be on sale.
