An unfair affair

Give an animal the dignity it deserves, always.

I USED to think that Vegans were fanatics and impractical. But as time and experience ticked by it became clear just how unfair we are to the animals we live on, prey upon and depend upon. Quite uncivilised and most unfair! Take a look at the life of a common buffalo, from our morning cuppa, to the precious curds at the end of each meal, the ghee in festival preparations, the leather in your shoes and accessories, the list of her contributions is quite impressive! You will surely agree that everyday in so many ways we need to be grateful to her.

But what happens when the dairy is done with her, when she is old like Grandma? She is trucked off to the slaughter house, unceremoniously and cruelly piled one on top of the other, arriving dead or unconscious, legs and horns broken. Then she is dragged off to a space where her throat is slit or sawed, in front of hundreds of her kind. What went wrong, she wonders?

"Wrong planet, wrong species to befriend," is her dying thought. She is then consumed by a human who imbibes all the suffering. We wonder why there is so much hunger, calamity and misery in our world? Well, agree to kill your surrogate mother and this is the collective Karma, the result!

The Vedic Age considered the cow the representative of the animal kingdom. People treated her with such respect that she was invited to all important gatherings to represent Mother Nature. The disgrace of killing a messenger of peace to a nation was equivalent to the killing of a cow. Hence the Hindus consider her sacred - though not any more sadly. Though there are laws that continue this tradition of allowing the slaughter of all domestic animals except that of the cow - she is slaughtered on the streets of Hyderabad in broad daylight. Not even provided a slaughterhouse neither measures of humanity. So imagine what the poor buffalo, her step sister, goes through?

All animal rights demand is this:

  • Please do not kill the representative of the animal kingdom- "The Cow". Nature will be offended and the sentiments of many are hurt.

  • Please provide decent transportation of any creature on its journey to slaughter.

  • Please do not take slaughter into your own hands - a trained and licensed butcher following slaughter rules is necessary.

  • Please make sure all slaughter, irrespective of religious beliefs, is done at an authorised slaughterhouse with proper provisions for effluence, etc.

  • Please partake of food that promotes the welfare of the creature involved.

  • Demand that an animal not be killed in front of other animals or in view of an audience.

  • Support the animal welfare efforts of your city to ensure these measures.

The buffalo will be very grateful to be free from this immense cruelty. Till next time do help an animal.
