A niche of its own

STEPPING INTO The Lizard Lounge at New Delhi's South Extension-II transforms you into quite another world. A dimly lit atmosphere, Arab music and exotic hookahs make you feel like you are in a tavern in downtown Cairo. In stark contrast to the trendy showrooms outside, the Lizard Lounge reminds you of a warm medieval bistro.

Growing popularity

The year-old restro-bar is fast growing in popularity with its combination of delectable Mediterranean food and upmarket music and dance floor. Shawarmas, shish kababs and falafel float around, creating an uplifting exotic ambience. There is an ongoing seafood festival in which interesting names like Gambier Avocado and Nicoise Salad highlight the menu. However, it's the rock lobster that is billed as a masterpiece. Described as a grilled and marinated lobster flavoured with fresh thyme and hollindise sauce, it surely manages to entice adventurous taste buds. Apart from the Mediterranean classic meats, fresh seafood and scrumptious vegetables, the Lizard Lounge offers Indian cuisine for those who like to play it safe. The prices here are steep but worth the sheer novelty of ambience and food.

"We have the finest possible choice of wines and international spirits, and 21 hookah flavours," says Neeraj Saraf, Director, The Lizard Lounge. "We also uniquely have a live kitchen counter where people can instruct the chef to make what they want," he adds. The Lizard Lounge functions as a restaurant in the afternoon and evenings, and a club at night, with an in-house DJ dishing out lounge music. Besides frequent live bands, the club features belly dancing once a week. The crowd here is mostly young and hip, but the place is apt for anyone who loves an exotic feast. With its Arabesque ambience and scrumptiously unusual culinary, The Lizard Lounge stands as a refreshing oasis in the middle of the predictable, Westernised lounges mushrooming across the city.
