Kerala cuisine, its forte

Kerala in suburban Selaiyur? That's Kudil, a restaurant that serves authentic fare at affordable prices


KUDIL, THE family restaurant that specialises in Kerala cuisine, on Agaram Road, Selaiyur, has a variety of surprises this Christmas for food lovers. Rabbit, crab and turkey roast, Scotch egg, pazham pori and vattappam, all sure to make Malayalis, who are away from home and yearning for that touch of homeliness in their Christmas dinner, go into raptures. But as the proprietor, John Kurien says, "Tamilians too love our food. Besides, we make dishes that our customers ask for even if they are not on the menu."

Wide variety

The restaurant serves a wide variety of dishes and chef Binesh can rustle up any item with dexterity. So, North Indian and Punjabi dishes such as paneer butter masala, malai kofta, butter chicken and aloo gobi are also available.

Though Kerala cuisine is all about spicing things up, the Chinese menu with its light soups and rice dishes can pacify palates that are not used to spicy food. The vegetable sweet corn soup is a delight, full of vegetables and not too thick. The rice must be eaten warm to be enjoyed. The chilli chicken is fried just right and served with a substantial portion of vegetables.

Appams and more

But Kudil's forte is Kerala cuisine. The aapams are a perfect accompaniment to the Kerala chicken curry, which also happens to be the most favoured dish among the restaurant's patrons. As a guest puts it, "The kappa meen curry is straight out of God's Own Country. Its specialities include kappa biriyani, puttu kadala, vegetable stew and Kerala parotta. The spices used are all sourced from Kerala.

Kurien says, "Our friends living here often long for good Kerala food at affordable prices and within practical distances. Since we are located in a suburb, they had to go to the city and pay exorbitant prices to eat Kerala food and, at times, return disappointed. So, I decided to set up a place where people could get authentic Kerala food at reasonable rates."

The USP of the place is, of course, the price. A generous helping of Syrian beef and Kerala chicken curry costs Rs. 35, while mutton pepper fry is priced at Rs. 65. Karimeen polichathu costs between Rs. 60 and Rs. 100.

The vegetarian and mutton biriyani varieties fall within the range of Rs. 30 to Rs. 50. An average meal for two will cost about Rs. 200.

The desserts are appealing with ice creams, payasams and caramel custard. The ambience is simple. The thatched roof structures with their tastefully done interiors, and the false ceiling made with Kerala mats, windows with bamboo grills and cane furniture all go to create that homely feeling.

Kudil is open from 11 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. with no breaks in between.
