Silks, crepes and of georgettes for party wear.
CHRISTMAS IS in the air and sales offering a wide range of products, from cakes to clothes and gifts, have become commonplace in Thiruvananthapuram.
The festive season is also the time to usher in the latest on the fashion scene.
Georgettes, chiffons, crepes.
"It is the season of georgettes, crepes and flowing material. The colours are bright and happy," says Sheila James of `Czarina' who caters to a "small clientele that prefers exclusive fabrics and designs." The prices of the exclusive saris that she designs start from Rs.1,000.
The `Ari' work in crepes and georgettes, embellished with `kundan' stones in antique gold finish, are the perfect fabrics to enliven your party mood. Georgette tissues (with interlocking zari and thread) and `Matka silk' (from Madhya Pradesh), which costs Rs. 2,850 are a good buy for those looking for something to wear for the New Year.
The georgettes cost between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 3,500 and the `Matka silk' costs Rs. 2,850. For those who like the rustle and feel of silk there are embroidered Kancheepuram saris in a range of eye-catching shades. The prices of those saris begin at Rs. 7,550.

For those who prefer soft and clinging material to stiff fabrics, there is always tussars with gold and silver zardosi work with price tags between Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 4,500.
Cotton comfort
For women who love cottons, `Pakitu' has a good collection of handloom saris from across the country. "The Andhra cottons, which costs between Rs. 300 and Rs. 800 come in deep and bright shades," says Jayan P, its proprietor. The Orissa cotton collection (prices range from Rs. 275 to Rs. 1,850) is a delightful combination of elegance and comfort.
Casuals
"Jeans in various shades and prints and trim fit shirts... ," says Sudheer A.R, who owns the newly-opened `Style-Up' in the city. "We also stock `Black' shirts like the ones worn by Mammotty in the movie," he adds.
"Designer shirts and kurtas with computerised designs, that cost between Rs. 365 and Rs. 600 are popular with students," says Nazar P, proprietor of `Naaz,' which has its own manufacturing and designing unit in Mumbai.
"For young girls, what is in are long skirts with short tops or shirts," says Shamnad of `Ladies Planet.'
"The accent is more on the salwar which is complimented with a dupatta in a subdued colour, ," says Sheila James, who also owns Cotton Studio.
