Celebration of crafts

There's something for everyone to choose from at the Dastkar exhibition at Amethyst

IT WILL be a celebration of crafts and their creators at a bazaar being organised by Dastkar from December 16 to 20 at Amethyst, 14/30, Padmavathi Road, Jeypore Colony, Gopalapuram.

Realising that craftspersons have a vital role to play as they not only showcase the beauty of the country's cultural past, but also contribute towards its economic future, Dastkar, a non-profit society, is organising the "Chennai Bazaar".

The bazaar will see the coming together of as many as 30 crafts groups and NGOs. There will be an enormous range of products made of natural fibre and materials exemplifying how the traditional craft techniques have been successfully adapted by Dastkar to suit contemporary tastes.

Traditional maheshwaris and chanderis from Madhya Pradesh, tussar weaves in natural dyes and godna paintings from Bihar, kasuti embroidered furnishings, vegetable dyed jute bags and eco-friendly wooden toys from Karnataka, jute modas and chairs from Uttar Pradesh, block printed and appliqué worked garments from Rajasthan, intricately embroidered garments, home furnishings, tie and dye saris, dupattas and stoles from Kutch, golden grass baskets from Orissa, bodo weaves from Assam, kantha work from West Bengal and natural tussar shawls from Uttaranchal will be on display.
