Doggone it

Ruma Sen, sworn dog-lover, growls at those pointing fingers at `messy' pets

Ruma Sen: `Why are dogs the target of some people's hate?' -- Photo: V. Sreenivasa Murthy

"THEY GLARE at us, give sidelong glances, stand outside their houses in threatening poses, and some even start barking! These are the so-called cultured, well-to-do denizens of our city, guarding their environment against `polluting' pet dogs and their poor escorts, the dog-walkers. Owning a dog sometimes gives me a feeling of tremendous guilt as everyday, I come face-to-face with people who look upon us (dog-owners) as no less than criminals, or worse, worthless twits who have nothing better to do in life but to walk their pets.

"I would like to ask these non-dog-owning, house-guarding, fierce people one thing. Why is the target of their hate directed at house pets that are well cared for, clean, and inoculated? Have they not even thought of the even more `polluting' millions of strays that flood each and every street, bylane and alley of the city? Do they not spread more disease? Are they not more of a nuisance factor? Besides, if pet dogs are not walked, do these unsympathetic people suggest a dog should be tied up 24 hours a day and relieve himself in the house?

"Secondly, do non-dog-owning, zealous guards of their home follow normal codes of hygiene themselves? I live in a so-called posh colony of Bangalore, with so-called up market residents throwing refuse in heaps in front of houses, in spite of a garbage pick up van coming along everyday.

"Hence, in order to have a clean environment, dear respected residents of Bangalore, please look around at the hundreds of other factors leading to an unclean environment. Please leave our pet dogs alone!"
