Drive in for homely food

Aarvee Drive Inn - for a quick bite in a casual environment


A DRIVE-INN restaurant is a godsend for those who want to have a quick bite or two. Apart from munching on your favourite food without wasting much time, it makes life a little easier in places where dining space is a luxury.

The Aarvee Drive Inn restaurant, a unit of Sri Aarvee Hotels, fits this description to a T. Located opposite the bustling Gandhipuram bus terminus, the restaurant caters to a rather different clientele - the floating population and night diners.

There is ample parking space, and so, if you get in early you can select an ideal spot to have your meal. Apart from the fast food items that include chaats, pizzas and sandwiches, the restaurant offers an expansive menu for dinner. This includes Indian breads, South Indian specialities, rice and noodle varieties and vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries.

"We offer light food, for the regular diners here do not like other items. Families constitute a major part of our client base," says R. Govindaraj, Manager, Food and Beverages, of the hotel.

Start off your meal with the cream of mushroom soup. It tastes sweet, thanks to the addition of milk and cream. The shredded mushroom is what makes this stand apart. There are a whole lot of dosa items in the main course. The bread dosa, prepared with moong dhal, is good. Bread crumbs, green chillies and dhaniya combine well in the dosa.

The sour and spicy Kaara dosa here is a must try. Though the spiciness is offset considerably by addition of sour tamarind, this is one dosa you can eat without accompaniments - the stuffing inside is wholesome.

The steaming hot idli is fluffy. No wonder, it is a favourite with the diners. Besides the usual accompaniments, you can have Chettinad chicken curry. The delicacy, prepared with coconut, coriander and shallots, tastes like it is made at home and leaves you asking for more. The Pesaruttu is crisp, because of the addition of rice flour.

The Rumali roti is soft and the paneer butter masala that is served as accompaniment is heavy on garlic. The Afghan kebab at the restaurant is not exactly authentic. The chefs have improvised on this famed delicacy by dipping the cooked kebab in beaten white egg and glazing it.

Also try the malai tikka, shole kebab and chicken tikka. Round off the meal with milk shake and ice cream. Zoo Loo, a scrumptious mango maze ice cream topped with drip tip sauce and glazed cherry, is a gourmand's delight.

The restaurant has separate kitchens for vegetarian and non-vegetarian items and has a seating facility for night diners. For bookings, contact 2523677/2523522/2523422.
