Artefacts from Orissa

AN EXHIBITION of handicrafts and textiles from various parts of Orissa has been organised by the Konarka Silpi Samabaya Samiti, a non-profitable cooperative society working for the crafts and craftsmen in Orissa.

Dhokra artefacts with some intricate wirework and cane frames steal the show at the exhibition. As for the prices they range from Rs.30 to Rs.400.

One can pick up Orissa's Pipli appliqué work in vibrant hues and interesting patterns as well as trendy patchwork. Patachitra paintings with themes drawn from Indian mythology too attract attention. Artist Saroj Mohanty is present at the venue to demonstrate this rare art form.

Typical jewellery in filigree (also known as Tarakasi) is another speciality of the region and there's a wide range to choose from.

One can go in for hair ornaments, anklets, toe rings, pendants and ear rings.

Terracotta and textiles

Terracotta artefacts with Worli paintings, palm leaf or silk painted greeting cards (Rs.100 for 10 cards), ethnic banjara jewellery (Rs. 30) and wooden utility items beckon attention.

Also on display is a wide variety of textiles, besides saris, salwar kameez sets, dupattas and kurtas.

A 20 per cent discount on textiles and 10 per cent on handicrafts is being offered at the exhibition, which is on till December 7, 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., at Sri Sankara Mini Hall, I floor, TTK Road, Alwarpet.
