Assam attraction

SHILPI PRESENTS a limited collection of the Assamese mekhla chador sets and saris in muga, eri and pat silks designed by Sampa's Boutique of Kolkata.

The mekhla chador, a prized possession of an Assamese bride, is a wonderful variation of the sari. The mekhla is a cross between a sarong and a lungi and the chador is worn with a crisscross pleat down the front to show off the ornate design woven along the pallavs.

Handwoven with the rich, golden muga silk yarn, the saris stand out for their vibrant shades and motifs, which include trees, creepers, flowers, peacocks, animals and geometric shapes. Many of them are embellished with gold and silver which enhances the look. The speciality of the Assam sari is that the borders are woven separately and attached to the body of the sari. The Assam silk is hardy in character and improves with every wash.

Legend has it that at one time, the muga silk was patronised only by the royalty and it was beyond the reach of the common man. Even today, the fact that it takes two months to weave a sari explains why these creations are so expensive.

The mekhla chadors and saris will be available at Shilpi, Nungambakkam, from December 3 onwards and at Shilpi, Alwarpet, from December 11 onwards, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
