Collective yet distant

The five artists cover common nuances of life yet their works are distinct


IF THE `old' draw crowds for their past, the young will, for their present. While `vintage' can be capitalised upon, the `modern' can be a great investment. With all respect to veterans, what we look for is what's `happening' and for the young, the new can certainly offer more promise.

The present exhibition of over 50 paintings and graphics at the Chitramayee State Gallery of Fine Arts by five young artists is a pointer in this direction and more - the mounting seriousness to pursue art as a profession. P. Mahesh, Mangurish Rajyadayax, Satender Singh, Sunil Chavdikar and Swathi Chaturvedi perched on the threshold of probable great careers, put up a propitious show aptly titled `Common Ground, Separate Pastures'. Demarcated in several ways, they are bound by their engagement with the figurative and as alumni of the Hyderabad Central University.

Confluence of ideas

A conflux of lithographs, etchings, drawings, oils and acrylics, the five youngsters emerge as significant alleys in setting up a stage of the modern milieu of angst and turmoil. No pretty faces and fancy arrangements for them. Their emotions emerge unreined, smooth and unhesitatingly reinforced by sincere efforts and good technical ability. Thematically what spreads across the exhibition is the aroma of personal strife and trauma. The pulsating emotions of each artist though, are categorically diverse.

While child artist Satender Singh rechristens himself an adult through his high-strung themes of self-exploration, amplified by the use of oil on canvas, Mahesh progresses with his sediments of the graduation days at Telugu University treating his female forms subtly. Sunil's figurations rely on textures and forms and nuances of his childhood memories in his village with undercurrents of compelling emotions. While Swathi occasionally releases her energies to be in tune with the technicalities of printmaking with simple conceptions like the `Dining Room' and several untitled prints, Mangurish, the only other printmaker in this show despite the conventional procedures of printmaking is a dialogue seeker through his juxtapositions of human images, animated linear patterns and play of light and shade.

The exhibition is on view at the Chitramayee State Gallery of Fine Arts till November 7, between 11.00 am and 7.00 pm.
