Appreciating art

A lecture series from November 4 will offer you an insight into contemporary Indian art

APPARAO GALLERIES in its commitment towards promoting contemporary Indian art is organising a specially conceived series of art lectures, spread over a month, in Chennai. Titled "The Journey of the Indian Brush", the lectures and slide shows will be delivered by Ashrafi Bhagat, Head, Department of Fine Arts, Stella Maris College.

The lectures will not only offer you an insight into the world of Indian contemporary art but also help you develop an ability to communicate with it.

Honing the eye and developing one's taste for art is the beginning of building a collection.

The series will serve as an eye-opener to what art in India is about, where it began and what direction it is taking.

The topics are: "The beginnings of contemporary art movement — the Company school, Ravi Verma, Rabindranath and Abindranath Tagore, Amrita Shergill and Jamini Roy" (November 4, 4.30 p.m.); "The spirit of freedom — the progressives from Bombay, the Shilpi Chakra of Delhi and the early Calcutta artists" (November 5, 4.30 p.m.); "The Baroda School" (November 6, 10.30 a.m.); "The Madras School" (November 19, 4.30 p.m.); "Introduction of the Indianness" (November 20, 10.30 a.m.); "Artists from the 1980s and 1990s" (November 25, 4.30 p.m.); "Trends in the art movement today" (November 26, 4.30 p.m.); and "Concepts of Modernism, Post-Modernism and Post-Colonialism: a debate" (November 27, 10.30 a.m.)

Those who wish to attend the lecture series can register over phone (28332602/03 or 98410 30737).

Apparao Galleries is located at 7, Wallace Gardens, Third Street.
