Dramatic designs

CHENNAI-BASED designer Erum Ali has come up with a new look for her Fall Winter collection. This time, the collection is inspired by the fairy tales and folklores.

The clothes are versatile yet unconventional, and designed to suit individual tastes. Ali has extensively used rivets, strings, frills, drapings, fusion layering, corset blouses with saris, hangings on edges, blouse ends, skirt ends, beaded and jewelled waist bands, knotted blouses, cut work.

Bright knotted tassles and buckles are an ethnic substitute for the traditional strap. The treatment of fabrics such as crepe, silk and linen is in traditional pattern like hounds tooth, plaid stripes, herringbone and checks.

There is a lavish use of tassled beads and gold hand painted motifs, which add that touch of glimmer.

The florals are intricate with bright prints. Red blooms and yellow roses in a white backdrop are a highlight of the collection, which also comprises the prêt line. Geometric patterns too make an appearance at times.

Colour is back with a vengeance. This season, Ali's collection will showcase dramatic jewel colours such as dusty apricot, old gold, mustard, yellow honey, banana cream, topaz, burnt ochre, camel, stone peach, orange, brown, chestnut, tobacco, wood tones, chocolate, pink, rose, chilli red, burgundy and beetroot.

Green is hot and happening this season, and there are many shades to suit different skin tones. Ali has gone for styles retro and vintage, be it embroidery or chikankari.

The outfits with floral geometric motifs are priced at Rs. 1,950, while the rest of the collection is Rs. 750 upward.

Erum Ali's collection is available at 49, First Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar.
