RAMZAN IS a good time to be in Hyderabad, twin cities food buffs would agree. There's the irresistible haleem, wheat and meat porridge topped with brown onions and mint. Or the appetising Dahi badey soaked in yoghurt. And who could forget faluda, firni and kebabs? Brick hearths and appetising bowls outside Irani restaurants make a good sight, after a long day especially.
Old city is `the' place to try out the Hyderabadi cuisine provided you are not a control freak. As you drive a little further ahead from Charminar, heavy aroma of ghee fills the air. Blame it on Pista House that has people queuing up for haleem till wee hours. "This year we have introduced `sweet' haleem laced with honey. It is a delicacy in the Middle East," says M.A.Majeed of Pista House. This apart the place is known for its vegetarian haleem. You get a serving of haleem for Rs. 40 here.
Yet another hub for the gooey delicacy, in the heart of the city, is Paradise. As the clock strikes 4 p.m. it is haleem time. "Over the past 4-5 years there have been increasing takers for the traditional dish," says Andre of Paradise as haleem tops the take away list during the season. And ire. "We plan to give a police complaint. People are selling our haleem in black," says Majeed of Pista House. "The lamb haleem is definitely the flavour of the season," agrees Mazhar, Hyderabad House.
Apart from the traditional lamb meat preparation, chicken haleem is also seen in the twin cities. As also traditional delicacies qubuli a lentil biryani, paya - lamb trotter preparation and more Hyderabadi dishes surface during the season. You can find these at Deccan Pavilion, ITC Hotel Kakatiya Sheraton -- haleem-vegetarian and non-vegetarian, Paya ki nihari with Tara naan or taftaan and biryani-gosht and tarkari, and qubuli during Ramzan (12 midnight to 2:30 a.m.) for its special menu, priced at Rs. 325 Rs. 375 plus tax.
And all this gourmet listing translates one word indulge, till it is the day for Sheer korma and Sewiyan ka halwa.
