"GUYS WITH receding hairlines can go in for trendy styles and look younger," says Mumbai-based hairstylist Dilshad Pastakia, whose clientele includes Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee.
"Simplicity is the key word when it comes to hairstyling for men," says Colin D'Silva, principal scientist at the R&D department of Procter and Gamble, Singapore.
While short hair is ideal for hot weather, sharp cuts are preferred, says Dilshad. "A spiky and funky style can be worn by even businessmen and executives, but most are hesitant and stick to conservative styles," says Dr. D'Silva.
Long hair is passé
"It is the out-of-bed, soft look with lots of movement, texturing and layers that is fashionable for both sexes. For women, the even-length, straight look is definitely out," says Dilshad.
According to her, mid-length styles don't require much maintenance, and short styles, none at all. "We Indians have at last got over our lambe baal obsession," chuckles Dilshad, "as I see a lot of young girls sporting short styles."
Bad for hair
Talking about hair care, Dr. D'Silva says hair gets damaged due to various treatments — mechanical (harsh brushing, wrong combing and improper use of clips), thermal (blow-drying and straightening irons) and chemical (colouring, re-bonding, bleaching and perming).
Besides, environment pollution and emotional stress compound the problem. The tradition of applying oil on the scalp and hair makes the problem worse. The reason — oily hair absorbs more dirt and grime. "A weekly oil application is acceptable wherein you apply oil and wash it off with shampoo."
Daily routine
"I find Indian women are more bothered about their hair than their skin," says Dr. D'Silva. "Cleansing and moisturising should be a daily routine but not many women do this. A combination of healthy skin and hair will enhance one's personality. So, both need to be given equal importance."
Filmstars
Dilshad says filmstars from Chennai fly to Mumbai to get styling done at her salon. She can hardly recall their names, except for one actor who she says is tall and well-built, has a moustache and comes with his dad. Guess who? It's Prashanth!
She says hairstyles have to be chosen keeping in mind one's lifestyle and personality. Certain spiky and funky cuts will suit only models and not everyone.
By using reputed products and going to a qualified stylist, you hair is safe, says Dr. D'Silva.
