STEP INTO the Poompuhar showroom on Anna Salai and Ganeshas in myriad forms welcome you. Ganesh Darshan is on at Poompuhar, well in time for Vinayaka Chaturthi.

This year, the main attraction is a huge bronze Ganesha in a meditative pose, called Dhyana Ganapathy. It is said to be inspired by a 12th Century statue of Buddha. The headgear and ornaments have been crafted based on the style followed in West Bengal. Another attraction is Narthana Ganapathy again in bronze, which depicts the deity dancing to the tunes of Saraswathi, Narada, Nandivarma and Hayagriva. Both the statues have been sculpted in Swamimalai.

A gigantic musical Ganesha kuthuvilakku (Rs.57,000), exclusively designed by the Poompuhar artisans, beckons attention for its fine craftsmanship.

Mind boggling variety

Ganeshas in granite, soapstone, wood and marble dust also form part of the display. The painted ones from Jaipur deserve special mention. There are innovative terracotta images from Kolkatta and Pondicherry. Images of Ganesh carved on semi precious stones are also on show. Vellerukku, glass, jute, clay and papier-mβchι Ganeshas — you name it and Poompuhar has it! Also available are lamps, greeting cards and wall hangings, all with Ganesha as the central theme. The exhibition is on till September 18, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A discount of 10 per cent is being given on all items.
