Icy delights

Ice Fruits whips up a mouth-watering concoction of ice-creams


YOU CANNOT help but notice the flurry of activity outside Ice Fruits, the restaurant near V.J.T. Hall, in the evenings. A small crowd can be seen lingering outside the restaurant at any given time of the night.

Reason: The shawarma and shawai chicken, two of the most popular Arabian dishes among Indian gourmands, which have been included in the menu. The grills used to cook these dishes, displayed in the verandah of the kitchen, gives foodies a good view of what is being cooked.

With many Malayalis migrating to the Gulf, it is but natural that those back home develop a taste for Arabian cuisine. Boneless chicken marinated in pepper and salt is first flattened out and inserted into a skewer, one above the other. The skewer with the chicken pieces is then inserted into a machine that emits high temperature through a hole. Periodic revolving of the skewer ensures that the meat is cooked uniformly on all sides. This meat is then peeled out (it comes out in shreds) and rolled in a kuboos (the typical Arabian soft roti made out of maida), with a liberal dash of mayonnaise, cucumber, onion and cabbage. This dish is called Shawarma (Rs. 20) and a couple of these could make a meal. Shawarma can also be had in a plate (Rs. 30), with the kuboos and the filling served separately. It is less messy when eaten this way.

Shawai chicken (Rs. 140 for a full plate and Rs. 70 for half) has grilled chicken with only the basic condiments for taste. "Arabian food generally contains no oil. So the food is very healthy," says Aamir, restaurant manager. The absence of oil makes the food no less tasty and shawai chicken is proof enough. The restaurant also offers Chinese cuisine, pizzas, burgers, sandwiches and cutlets.

It also has a wide array of ice-creams to choose from.

"The ice-creams served here are specialties of Mangalore and won't be found on the menu of any other ice cream parlour in the State," claims Aamir.

Ice-creams

The choice of ice-creams is mind-boggling. Parafite (Rs. 26) comprises a slab of ice-cream and two scoops of the ice-creams of your choice. The colourful and tasty Parafite, topped with fresh fruits, is worth the money.


Gadbad (Rs. 25), contrary to what the name insinuates, is quite innocent.

It has three scoops of ice-cream, some dry fruits, fresh fruits and jelly. Sandy Nuts (Rs. 24), with two slabs of vanilla ice cream sandwiching powdered caramel cashew nut, looks quite plain, but tastes yummy and leaves you craving for more.

Beehive (Rs. 24) has vanilla and strawberry ice-creams, along with nuts and a liberal quantity of honey poured over it. There is no end to the permutations and combinations available at Ice Fruits. Check out the joint if you want to know what else is on offer.
