Showcase of skill

Bronzes, woodcuts and terracotta artefacts are on show at the Srushti fair

One of the bronze icons on display at the Srushti Fair

IN REMOTE corners of Tamil Nadu, artisans craft superb bronzes of Nataraja, Ganesha, Parvati, Krishna and Devi under the expert guidance of master craftspersons.

These icons, which are created using the 1,000-year-old wax method, find pride of place in temples, corporate offices, hotels and homes across the world.

Encouraging the craftspersons and providing them a platform to showcase their wares is Srushti, the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Artisans Welfare Association.

Srushti is holding a crafts fair of bronzes, woodcuts and terracotta artefacts. The highlights are the huge bronzes of Lakshminarasimhar, Parvati in a sitting posture and a prancing horse.

There are smaller pieces too that are affordable.

Ideal gifts

A variety of brass kuthuvilakkus is also on display — hanging ones, diyas and aarti lamps. The elegant woodcuts make ideal gift items.

Also available at the fair are Jaipur silk and gemstone paintings, bright woven dhurries, appliqués and embroidered products, shell artefacts and ethnic block printed fabrics. A 10 to 20 per cent discount is being offered on all items.

The Srushti `All Crafts Fair' is on till September 27, at Sudarsan Building (opposite Hotel Park Sheraton), 86, Chamiers Road, Alwarpet.
