Mystic creations

Maya keeps pace with changing fashion trends and updates its stock.

AS I enter this small but neat store, the first thing that caught my attention was the gorgeous red wrap around skirt donned around the black mannequin in front. Extremely attractive with a block print design, this skirt teamed with the short sleeveless pin tuck work blouse was a clear sample of the collection at this trendy store. And this is available at the designer store Maya, where the clothes are chic, classy, and at the same time ethnic and traditional. Located in the busy area of Jayanagar IV Block, this store was started in January 2003.

"The USP of our brand Eleganza is our exclusive range of formal traditional wear," says Rajendra Verma who started this store alongside his brother Shyam. A student of NIFT, Mr. Verma personally supervises each of the designs displayed at Maya. The focus is on the embellishment of each garment in such a way that it is unique adds Mr. Verma.

Mix 'n' match

Available in the store are kurtis in various fabrics including cotton, silk, and crepes. The designs vary from simple handwork to tie and dye and more intricate ones with crystal work. Check out the elegant ones having the traditional chikan work. Starting from Rs. 275, the kurtis are available in four sizes — small, medium, large and extra large.

Skirts include both long skirts and wrap arounds. Stylish cuts coupled with ethnic mirror work and embroidery here is the perfect example of fusion wear. The Kalamkari and block prints make the skirts look really unique. The short kurtas available in handloom and mangalgiri cotton are priced at Rs. 365 upward. The range of long kurtas is definitely worth a look for all of you in a mood to mix and match.

A big draw of course is the store's array of salwar kameez sets that start from Rs. 825. Maya proves to be a virtual treat for formal wear whether it is the simple cottons or the gorgeous tussar silk sets. Each piece proves to be different whether it is the exclusive beadwork, cut work sleeves, appliqué work or the elegant kantha embroidery. Priced between Rs. 1,200 and Rs. 1,700, the tussar silk set with subtle embroidery is perfect for parties and festivals. Jute silk and matka silk are a big hit given their elegant sophisticated look.

Even the dupattas of each salwar kameez are designed creatively to give the outfit that perfect finish. Check out their crushed dupattas and also the ones with the traditional "shiburi" work. "This is a unique style of tie and dye wherein the fabric is machine stitched and then dyed to form a unique pattern rather than being hand stitched. This is then adorned with mirrors and beads to give the traditional look," explains Mr. Verma.

Changing trends

"We constantly keep pace with the ever changing fashion trends and change stock as often as once a week," adds Mr. Verma. Maya's new range of designs in lightweight silk will be donning the shelves soon he says. The latter is available in bright colours and also has the advantage of being warm, something that's essential for winter, that's round the corner.

Maya is definitely a must visit in case you are looking for that touch of exclusivity and style. It is located at 702, 10th `A' Main, 33rd cross, 4th Block, Jayanagar. Maya can be contacted on 51210335.
