Visitors to the Thali Festival at the Quality Inn Residency are in for Gujarati-Rajasthani fare

A THALI festival of all things - many would wonder at the idea. Because, normally festivals are supposed to be exotic or different from the routine. Thali is quintessentially Indian. Thali and katoris are a part of life in most west and north Indian households. There is an earthy charm associated with a thali filled with katoris of food. Even our movies have depicted that. If you want to go traditional outside the precincts of the home try the Thali festival at the Venue Restaurant, Hotel Quality Inn Residency, Nampally.

All those who used to be regulars at Madhuban Restaurant, Quality Inn Residency some years ago will remember the Gujju-Rajasthani thali served there. The thali did not fit in the new scheme of things at The Venue restaurant as the focus changed. "The thali was the unique USP of Madhuban. This prompted me to have a thali festival. The menu is traditionally Gujarati-Rajasthani with a tinge of Punjabi," says Ravish Daway, General Manager. All those who love this food can happily indulge in it though on a leisurely note. Remember there is one thali and not different thalis.

Traditional greeting: Visitors are welcomed with tikka and flowers.

The ambience: The Venue restaurant sports a Rajasthani look - with colourful streamers and puppets (kathputli).

What to look for: A full course sumptuous vegetarian menu comprising jaljeera, farsan (snacks), chutneys/pickles, 4 vegetables, one kadhi, one dal, different wheat preparations (thin phulkas, parathas, bajra roti, missi roti) two varieties of rice (pulao/khichdi and plain) and sweets. The items vary from day to day.

Speciality dishes: Ker sangri, ghatte ki sabzi, undhiya, dal-bati-churma, goonde ki sabzi, wadi papad, methi papad ki sabzi, dahi wada with chutneys, kachoris, ghewar, rabid malpua

Taste: While the Gujarati items are a little slight, some of the Rajasthani fare is spicy.

Pricing: Reasonable. The thali costs Rs. 150 plus taxes and the servings are unlimited.

Service: The waiters dressed in traditional attire are constantly going round for serving hot wheat preparations and other dishes. Some of the items are cooked live.

Chef's comments: Most of the ingredients for certain dishes are brought from Rajasthan to impart authenticity.

After word: Don't forget to have saunf as the meal is filling.

Length of festival: The festival is open till August 22 (for dinner).
