Dastkar's back


THE DASTKAR Bangalore Bazaar is back. Over 55 crafts groups and NGOs from all over the country will promote their craft skills and sell their artefacts ranging from a stone sculptures, leather footware, a wide variety of fabric, wooden and wire toys, tribal jewellery, bags and accessories, palmleaf engravings, glazed pottery and more.


This is the ninth year that Dastkar has come to Bangalore with groups such as SEWA Banaskantha that supports 5,000 rural women; Urmul Marusthali Bunkar Vikas Samiti, an organisation self-run by former camel-herders and weavers of Rajasthan; Dastkar Ranthambhore that provides a livelihood to villagers displaced with the creation of the Ranthambhore Tiger Park; Berozgar Mahila Kalyan Sanstha beaed in Bihar and organisations like the Aagaz Bead Project that supports women who make contemporary toys, decoratives and desktop accessories, rather getting caught in the rut of than selling low-quality costume jewellery to contractors.

Fabric and material in various forms will form the highlight of the exhibition: block-printed, tie-dyed, batik, khadi, embroidered, mirror-work, appliqué, Maheshwari, Tussar, Chanderi and the like.


Dastkar, formed in 1981 by six women, aims at making crafts groups self-reliant and in control of their lives and their organisations. Dastkar acts as resource person, consultant and evaluator for others in the field too.
