Beyond glamour

IN A bid to cut a path in the fashion industry, the J.D. Institute of Fashion Technology has come up with an innovative way of industry interaction for its students. Moving away from the conventional placement sessions, it conducted a two-day preview to the annual show for its graduatingstudents so that a wider platform could be provided to them. The institute showcased their works before the industry in a vibrant atmosphere at The Ashok hotelin the Capital this past week. Some leading designers and corporates were invited to meet the students and evaluate their work.The preview was an integrated design show displaying various genres of designing ranging from fashion and jewellery to interiors. New silhouettes, fabric textures and colours were explored in an innovative way. The collections of students consisted of four garments, which included one promotional garment depicting their theme and three commercial garments to give a holistic approach to the collection. The use of solitaire that is rapidly gaining popularity in the domestic as well as Indian markets was the centre of attraction at the preview. A new technique of latest enamelled jewellery was also emphasised,as the trend confirms that this non-toxic technique is fast replacing the traditional meenakari.

Highlighting the advantages of the event, R.C. Dalal, Executive Director of the institute, says, "Most of the time real skill and intricacy of work that goes into the making of the collection gets overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of the fashion show. Therefore, this preview was conducted to draw attention to the quality of students' works as well as to give them a chance to explain their concepts and ideas to the professionals. The visual merchandising students have worked around the theme of nature while making a clear demarcation between visual merchandising in Indian and Western markets. While the merchandising trend in the West is to make a subtle and product-based display, in India merchandising themes are concept-oriented wherein display designers create arrangements working around a story, which adds a lot of glitz to the product. I am sure that the preview would become a means of more opportunities to students in the industry."
