For a NAIL-BITING finish

JUST AS a good set of teeth is an asset to a beautiful face; good nails have much to do with beautiful hands. Dry, frayed, cracked nails detract from the beauty of ones hands and feet. A few minutes of daily care and a few precautions is all that is needed to make them look smashing.

Nails reflect ones health. Illness, poor diet, deficiency of iron, lack of vitamins, proteins, calcium etc., affect their health and growth. Detergents, washing powders and bleaches are powerful chemicals and can damage nails. Further, household chores like dish washing, laundry, swabbing the floor, gardening and opening tins causes physical injury to them. So, precaution and care is required to avoid damage to nails. One of the simplest ways to prevent damage is to wear gloves while working in the kitchen or during gardening. It is important that your gloves are large and comfortable, and do not wear them for more than half an hour at a time, because they themselves may cause problems. You should rinse your hands and dry them carefully after the work is done. Then apply a moisturising cream liberally.

Manicure

Give yourself a manicure. It takes less than 20 minutes, costs you almost nothing and will leave your nails beautiful. What is needed is a bowl of water to which half a tablespoon shampoo is added. Other accoutrements required are hand cream, enamel remover, emery board, nail clippers, a pair of sharp curved scissors or cuticle trimmers, a soft sponge, hand towel and cotton wool.

After removing the old nail paint, soak the hands in the bowl of soapy water for 5 minutes. Clean your nails using a sponge. Then dry your hands and nails thoroughly. Clip the nails to the designed length. Don't clip them too far down the side of the nail. Using an emery board to smoothen the edge of each nail to a good shape. File the nails only in one direction from the side to the centre. Use the rough side of the emery board to sharpen the nails and the other side to smoothen the rough edges. Avoid filing far down into the corners of the nails. Bevel the edges of the nails as it reduces the chance of the nails from breaking. Check the symmetry of the shape of nails by looking of them with the palm facing you. Soften the cuticles with soapy water. Using a small pair of sharp clippers and trim off any rough skin that is present around them. With a cotton wool, gently clean under each nail to remove any remaining dirt. Apply cream to the cuticles. Massage the fingers using plenty of hand cream on to the rest of the hand. For strong and healthy nails, dip nails in gelatine for a few minutes.

Drinking gelatine with hot milk every night strengthens nails. Include curd, green salads in your daily diet. To keep nails soft and flexible use cuticle cream at night before going to bed. Apply some petroleum jelly on your nails if you are about do any messy job. It prevents dirt from getting lodged in them. Brittle nails can be strengthened by dipping them in olive oil. Stains on nails can be removed by rubbing them with vinegar. Moreover, as nails reveal your personality follow the above course of action and possess the most enviable set of healthy and well-groomed nails.
