Marie Accomiato's lens captures amazing images of India in black and white
|
OVER THIRTY photographs, different locales, one theme Mystic India. It is a month-long celebration of photography at the Alliance Française de Madras. Eminent photographers from India and France have put together their lens view of the two countries. This week, it is Marie Accomiato, who has captured India in its various moods and titled it `Carnets Indiens.'
Marie Accomiato's curiosity about and fascination for the country come through in her black and white works of people, places and faces. Although her themes are predictable the Brihadeeshwara Temple at Thanjavur, pilgrims on the banks of the Ganges, Rajasthani women sitting in solitude, pilgrims lighting lamps at Tirumala and the backwaters of Kerala there is a certain elegance to every frame.
Over the past seven years, Marie has travelled to different parts of the country and captured what she calls a "poetic, sensitive vision of India through the eyes of a woman."
The themes may not be imposing but careful attention has been paid to detail as is seen in the picture `L'attente' that shows jasmine flowers tucked behind the ear of a Kalaripayattu artiste. The angle chosen reflects her way of looking at India the picture focussing on the elephant's legs with a lathi beside it, is worth a mention.
There are a few panoramic shots that reveal the photographer's eye for beauty. The picture of the shimmering Ganges in Benares, though in black and white, captures the grace of the river. So is the picture depicting the seashore at Mamallapuram where a fisherman is seen resting in a boat.
The photography exhibition is on till May 22 at the Alliance Francaise de Madras, 24, College Road, Nungambakkam.
