Elegant kitchens

Cookspace has come to this metro to meet the exacting demands of housewives to make their kitchens more convenient and look more elegant at an affordable price. Its kitchens compare favourably with imported kitchens but cost 40 per cent less, claims the manager, Narayana Rao. Started in Chennai four years ago to manufacture modular kitchens with imported designs, Cookspace uses materials to suit Indian cooking and climatic conditions to last for a life time. It has showrooms at Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Mangalore, Goa, Trichur, Salem, Tiruchi and Karur. Visakhapatnam is the latest city on Cookspace's list. According to Mr. Narayana Rao, the kitchen designs have been imported from Italy, the world leader. The materials are, however, selected to suit Indian conditions. European kitchens invaraibly use particle boards for construction of cabins. Cookspace kitchens on the other hand use solid wood and boiling water resistant marine plywood specially treated for durability for the cabins. They are tropicalised to withstand hot and humid conditions and built to withstand oil spills, washing with detergents and other forms of rough handling experienced in Indian kitchens. The wood is treated against termites, borers, etc. There is a wide choice when it comes to shutters. The kitchens are available in 15 combinations ranging from rich wood finish to traditional design to sleek, modern ones. Above all, the computer designs are made to suit the space constraints of each house. The drawings are made considering the space available and the position of doors and windows. The customers are then offered different designs for selection. All the materials are machine-made to ensure quality. Imported glue is used for bonding. Cookspace is so confident of its quality that it offers a 10-year guarantee and life-long free service. The company also provides granite base, sinks, dish-wash, stoves on the kitchen platform and also exhaust. A 10 feet X 10 feet kitchen may cost anywhere from Rs.50,000 to Rs.1.2 lakhs to suit the budgets of different customers.''Cookspace kitchens cost 10 per cent more than carpenter-made kitchens but certainly costs less than imported kitchens with which they compete for looks and quality,'' contends Dinakar of Akrithi, the franchisee in Visakhapatnam.
