A world on canvas

The works of two Swedish painters on show in the city take you from one crisis to another

THE WORKS of Swedish painters Jens August Lindqvist and Ossian Theselius have a disturbing element to them. Their paintings denote an urgency born of a crisis. The colours move over the canvas, as if under compulsion to convey quickly whatever they have to. In their hurry, they seem to trip over each other, merge and run together for a while and then decisively part ways. In many of the paintings, red and black predominate. In one, the board is deliberately peeled off to emphasise the theme of violence.

Let their paintings take you through the world they are trying to portray, and you would find yourself lurching from crisis to crisis. Smoke fumes swirl around you, weapons of mass destruction loom over you, ideologies are torn to smithereens and human beings move about in ragged lines of confusion.

Jens and Ossian are artists possessed by a social vision that they enjoy sharing. Earlier this year, the two displayed their paintings at the World Social Forum in Mumbai.

Their works are on display at Launch Pad gallery, Chhotabhai Centre, 140, Nungambakkam High Road.
