Casual, cool and chic, donning sportswear means making a fashion statement. The city has a trendy but limited range on the shelves.

WANT TO make a fashion statement? Today, one can do so by sporting sportswear. And the city's exclusive sports wear shops have a trendy though limited range.

Foreign brands dominate the market force here with branded stuff like Reebok, Addidas and Nike calling the shots. The Reebok showroom at Shenoy's Junction has a good collection of unisex T-shirts in cotton and polyester or Lycra blend. Sweatshirts, jogging tracks, shorts, aerobics tops, tights, and Capri type tracks are just some of the trendy sportswear availble. But the latest collections of cap-sleeved tennis tops in cool shades are perfect summer wear options. There are also some loose-fitting sleeveless tops with collars; ideal for those who want to flaunt their bulging biceps and at the same time beat the heat. Paresh Shah, showroom manager, too feels that the garments disappear from the shelves not to be used as sports wear but as casuals. "Our customers are in the age bracket of 15-30 and some foreigners too. And it's because the youth have become so brand conscious that we can heave a sigh of relief. Reebok and Addidas are priced much lower than their Indian competitors."

Indian players in this market segment, like Wills Lifestyle, have yet to introduced their sportswear line, here. Other than clothes, shoes are the main attraction. One can scout for any type of shoe here whether it is for walking, jogging or trekking. Recent introductions from the Reebok and Addidas stable in summer wear as in Play Dry and Climamate is also on display. Made from 100 per cent polyester they do stick to the body in these sweaty climes. You can also get a fitness mat for 850 and waiting in the wings to be launched is their yoga mat.

A few sports goods stores, in the city, also deal in sports wear. But, it is solely in terms of custom made stuff. Clubs and institutions can place orders or else choose from ready-mades manufactured by the companies. Mr. Reji, of Teams Sports Wear, Penta Menaka says, "we get many orders from people asking for cricket jerseys of different countries. Mainly it's India but the yellow of Australia is also a favourite."

So, be a sport. Put on that sports jersey you kept for the Sunday match.
