Jaipur, in New Delhi

BLOCK PRINTING of Jaipur is a rage among many people. So any shop or showroom selling clothes from the Pink City is usually crowded. Now Delhiites have one more such outlet. Soma, a popular name in handicrafts from Jaipur, has recently opened its second retail outlet at Connaught Place. The basic aim of Soma - which started primarily as an export company in 1984 and came into retailing in 1995 - is to present the popular block-printed textiles of Jaipur in the Capital at affordable rates.

There will always be something new for the customers at Soma, be it in colours, styles or ranges.

Soma has set the trends in transforming the traditional handprints into stylised clothes and furnishings - so goes its claim. "Many of our customers have associated Soma with floral patterns. We would like to bring some of the natural beauty into people's living space," says Radhakrishnan Nair, Managing Director.

At Soma, designers from around the world contribute to the designs and prints. Soma houses a range of home furnishings and accessories, fashion wear for women, men and children. The company is committed to working with hand block-printed textiles to bring back the lost glory of the block-printing industry and the dignity of the craftsmen.

Around a thousand families are involved in different stages of production, and no machines are used, claims Nair.
