FACE of royalty

A diamond with Rajmata Gayatri Devi's face engraved on it? Yes. Now the famed piece is in Chennai

SHE'S NOT the legendary queen who has led troops to the battle. But she is celebrated for her beauty and élan. And that's precisely why the Diamond Trading Company has chosen Rajmata Gayatri Devi for a special tribute. Diamonds being her best friend, the DTC has engraved her face in a unique prism-shaped stone.

At G. R. Thanga Maligai, T. Nagar, where the diamond is on display, the Rajmata `meets' the masses. Amidst the din of excited shoppers and cloying salesmen is a papier-mâché mine specially created for displaying the dazzler.

The flawless five-carat diamond has the Rajmata's face captured in its regal splendour. Laser-engraved, you can't feel it on the surface, for the work is done painstakingly on the inside. Priceless as it is, the exclusive piece is mounted on a diamond projector for spectators to catch glimpses of the Queen of Jaipur.

Arranged in small niches in the mine are also the Rajmata's signature line of solitaires (part of the Arisia collection) and a huge conglomerate matrix from the depths of the earth where the gemstones are found.

"The diamond, a one-of-its-kind piece has come from DTC, London. It will be displayed in other metros as well. But for the South, GRT is the only destination," says G. R. Radhakrishnan of the jewellery showroom. "The exhibition is on till Monday," he adds. Incidentally, GRT was adjudged the `Best Diamond Showroom' during the recently concluded diamond season.

Classy and charismatic, the Rajmata who is surfing her seventies continues to radiate timeless appeal. Much like the diamonds she endorses. And this show proves yet another facet of royalty's romance with the stone. And vice versa!
