Serene, sophisticated and savoury

THE SURROUNDING, green with plants all around and the tiled roof in light red, give a good appearance. Though sited in one of the round-the-clock busy areas, still the entire environment is serene.

The location is the Bell Hotel on Tamil Sangam Road, which welcomes the guests with a Chinese formation entrance. An immediate causeway on the right opens up to one end of the dining hall, located there is the youth segment. But, the main entry to the hall extends from the parking space.

"The hotel is constructed in the style of those of its kind in Malaysia", says U.Perumal, manager of the hotel.

One need not scroll the Carte du Jour at this hotel, as atop the counter of every cuisine is the list of items available, thus making it easy for customers to select the dish of their choice. There are four counters covering the South Indian, North Indian (both vegetarian), Tandoori (for North Indian non-vegetarian) and Gold Dragon (Chinese dishes) followed by Cake Shop, Ice land, Juice and Tea Stall.

For those, who barge in for a small grub, on the extreme end is located the self-service section, where pastries, desserts and tea or coffee are available.

So massive is the dining hall, named Food Court, that it can accommodate up to 200 persons at a time. A section of the hall, which can house up to 60 customers, is marked for the youth community or students. In tune with their interests, pictures of leading pop singers such as Britney Spears, Shania Twain, etc., and popular bands such as Back Street Boys, All Saints, etc., are displayed on the tables. In the evenings these `stars' glow because of the lighting effect provided from the bottom of the table.

The youth clan, mostly students, bridge the gap between the day and evening group of customers.

"From 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. it is all rice items, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, which adorn every table and in the evening, the same is loaded with `kadai masala', grilled chicken and Chinese dishes", says Mr. Perumal.

"If employees of nearby business establishments throng the hotel in the day, the evening session is dominated by families. To cater to the needs of kids, provision has been made for children's play. For this, we charge Rs.2.50 per kid. This will be a freebie during the Christmas", he says.

For those, who prefer everything cool, the AC hall is also available. It is segmented into three areas, cabin `A', cabin `B' and the general hall. Advance booking can be made for cabin `A' and cabin `B'. "The cabin `A' is sought mostly by families or VIPs and `B' is chosen for get-togethers, birthday parties, etc. We will hold the room for a maximum of 30 minutes from the time fixed by the customer. Spot booking can also be done depending on vacancy of the rooms", says Mr. Perumal.


"For the AC section, an additional 12 per cent will be collected and for booking cabins there is no separate charge. But, if the time taken by the customer extends beyond an hour and a half, an additional 12 per cent will be charged", he says.

Buffs, who want to relish the food in an open atmosphere, an open-air roof top section is run by the hotel on the terrace over the AC section, where 60 persons can be accommodated. This branch functions only in the evening from 7.00 to11.00.

"Kadai masala is one of the special dishes of our hotel. Equally goes well the grilled chicken and chinese items among our customers. As a special dish for the Christmas, we are planning to treat the customers with `Turkey fry'. Apart from this, the kids will be gifted with balls, caps, goggles, etc. during the festival. A cake fest has been going on from December 18 and will continue till January 8", says Mr. Perumal. The tariff is fixed to suit all sections of the city.

"It takes a maximum of 15 minutes to make any dish and for the regulars, just a few minutes", claims Mr. Perumal.

There is also a good set of corporate clients, who get lunch on a daily-basis delivered at their respective offices from this hotel. We also undertake door delivery, but the order should not be for less than five persons.

Among VIPs, who regularly visit this outlet are the Assembly Speaker Kalimuthu, the Tiruparankundram MLA S.M. Seenivel, the former Minister Anwar Raja, etc. Some cine personalities such as Ramarajan and Santana Bharati, come to our hotel whenever they come to the city.

Foreign and domestic tourists also form a major chunk of this lot.

Some notable features of this hotel are that the entire campus is a smoking prohibited zone and Halal food is served here. Similarly, the vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods are cooked separately in differents. The `Set Tiffin', offered at Rs.22, includes idly, mini dosai, pongal, kesari and tea or coffee. Omelette and some egg items are spot cooked, in front of the customers, and served. For the weekends, it is the `chicken chukka' and to the week generally starts with the candle light dinner, on Mondays. "This is a big hit among our customers, mostly dominated by youth", says Mr. Perumal.

Among future plans, the management is contemplating introducing car service in the parking space.
