Shop till you drop

With Christmas and New Year round the corner, the city residents are on a shopping spree...

THE CITY RESIDENTS are in a festive mood. It is that time of the year when they shop for dresses, decorations for the Christmas tree, gifts, cakes and chocolates.

The Cooptex, Tamil Nadu handlooms, offers discounts between 30 and 60 per cent, while the Handloom house gives a discount of 20 per cent on silk saris, dress materials and readymade garments.

Ethnic Weaves, a boutique, has fancy georgettes with badla work (Rs. 850), silk, crushed tissue and tussar salwar sets in bright colours. Block-printed cotton salwar sets with handloom dupatta (Rs. 550-Rs. 750), Gadwals in silk (Rs. 2,500) and cotton (Rs. 1,350) with double coloured borders and rich pallavs are also available. Tussar silk saris with embroidery and cut-work done will cost you about Rs. 3,500. Block printed crepe silks and chiffons with mirror work, kanchi cotton with attached blouse piece are also available. Czarina, another boutique, has saris in chiffon, georgette and crepe with sequin and badla work. Gadwals, in silk meant for party wear, cost between Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 5,000. Daboo prints on heavy silk are the Christmas speciality at the store. Saris in chikan work with badla are priced at Rs. 1,200 and above. Printed chiffon salwar sets with sequins are doing well this season.

The Fall-Winter Collection at Wills Lifestyle store features herringbone shirts (Rs. 1,295). The casual end has trousers in blue, military olive and grey. The shirts come in various colours such as maroon, blue, brown and pinkish hues.

The `Wills Sports' also has striped shirts, half-placket stretch shirts, printed and crushed cottons in shades of blue, black, grey and brown (Rs. 895-Rs. 1,095).

The trousers in the `corporate twills' section is made of cotton, viscose and nylon. Wrinkle free chinos are also available.

The women's wear has ribbed-edged T-shirts, with raglan sleeves, in a blend of viscose and cotton (Rs. 995). This comes in only one shade: red. Sweatshirts cost about Rs. 995.

The major shopping outlets such as Parthas, Aiyappas and Alappat Silks have a range of garments.

Dreams, Archies, Hallmarks, Style Plus and Garden City (Narmada shopping complex) have colourful decorations for Christmas trees. Gold and silver-coloured bells, danglers, streamers, bows, Santas and masks are on display.

Major bakeries and pastry outlets such as Ambrosia, Haute Breads, Swiss Bake House among others are all set to celebrate Christmas. Apart from Christmas fruitcake, cream cakes and pastries will be lined up.

Egg-less cakes are very much in demand. Christmas cakes have invariably been the essence of the festival.

The restaurants in the city have come up with special menus featuring Christmas cakes and puddings.
