Revelling in rural charm

Manohar's paintings have usual themes, dealt skilfully

AN ALUMNUS of the College of Arts & Crafts, Chennai, Manohar Raja specialises in landscapes, particularly rural scenes. His imaginations are filled with green fields, lush woods and villagers going about their daily chores. One also gets to see the bullock carts, women carrying hay on their heads, men driving cattle etc. The tree-shaded paths appear welcoming for people struggling with crowded roads, and traffic snarls of the city. Even Lord Ganesha under the peepal tree appears totally relaxed in Manohar's painting.

He uses the knife and brush skilfully to create a rough or matt surface in his acrylic paintings. The tree trunks and branches or stones also show a slight relief effect. While his watercolour landscapes have a sunny feeling, the acrylic ones are slightly dark. The somewhat abstract mountain-scapes done with the knife are interesting.

Manohar's watercolour flowers can cheer a room with their bright, happy appearance. The same cannot be said of the flowers arranged formally in his acrylic works.

The paintings are on show at the Lakshmi Ethiraj Gallery, W 46, II Avenue, First Floor, Anna Nagar till December 14, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
