Aachi and the attractions

Savour Chettinad delicacies in a pastoral ambience

WITH ITS lunettes and crocket-like ornamentations, the Malgudi restaurant at Savera bears the unmistakable cachets of the past. For the Chettinad Food Festival, on till November 30, the restaurant has been bestowed with a few more symbols of tradition. Large as life, there's a potter at the entrance. Visitors can try their hand at the potter's wheel. Hard by, you find a kili josiyakaran with his parrot picking up cards of portent for those interested. To complete the picture of a South Indian pastoral scene, there is a valayal karan (bangle seller) vending his variegated glass bangles. Inside, an elaborately impressive Chettinad dinner awaits you - Karaikudi Urundai Katti Kozhambu, Kalluatti Kadamba Sadham, Kanadu Kathan Kadai Varuval, Pudupati Pacha Milagai Curry, Veechu Parotta, Kuzhi Paniyaram, Paal Paniyaram and so on.

The glitterati from the film world and other high-profile fields will in be attendance all through the food fest. On the opening day, actresses Manorama `Aachi' and Suhasini Maniratnam and writer Sivasankari lent stardust to the show. Manorama spoke at length about Chettinad cuisine. She also gave out the recipes for Vellai Paniyaram, Uppu Kari and Pavaka Fry. Sivasankari explained the ways in which Ara Nellikai (small gooseberry) can be used to spice up your food, and Suhasini, the preparation of a tomato dish that would go with rice cakes.

Rahool Saksena, who has made a name for himself by creatively using recycled materials to make art lamps, is holding an auction of the lamps that the mentally challenged children of RASA have made, under his guidance. The proceeds will go to RASA. On the first day of the food fest, it was profoundly touching to see these children strain every nerve to sing a few songs.

As the restaurant takes its name from the imaginary South Indian town that R. K. Narayan created in his novels and short stories, there will be a live enactment of a few chapters from his books. "Swami and His Friends" and other characters from Malgudi will come alive from the pages of the author's novels.
