Seeds of creativity

S. M. Sundaram uses seeds and shells to create attractive pieces of art

WHEN 71-YEAR-OLD S. M. Sundaram, an industrialist manufacturing automobile fasteners, decided to retire, he had quite a few ideas that he wanted to try out. A chance gift of dry fruits and nuts from a friend three years ago brought out the artist in him. "With the pistachio shells I did a small piece of hand work just to while away my time. Later, I became interested in collecting seeds and shells to make various pieces of art," says Sundaram.

He sorts the seeds according to their shape and colour and with adhesive sticks them on a cardboard to create designs and motifs. "When I go for a walk I collect seeds. Sometimes my gardener brings them," he says. Not just this, he spends time assembling jigsaw puzzles, which his four daughters settled abroad, send. The puzzles have 300 to 6,000 pieces. He has completed assembling 80 puzzles so far.

In his younger days, Sundaram was an avid cricketer and formed the Vigneshwara Cricket Club. He was also a dog breeder and an expert gardener who had a variety of roses in his garden.

After his inaugural show of shellcraft, held three months ago, he is ready with some more of his interesting creations. This time, he has made a vintage car with seeds and pistachio shells, the Eiffel tower and other designs, totalling to 35. And he has made about 15 jigsaw puzzles, mostly landscapes.

Sundaram's creative work will be showcased in an exhibition titled "Seeds and Shells" at No. 1, Eldams Road, Alwarpet, from November 20 to 23, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
