Hyderabadi Food Mela at The Hub brings local delicacies


EVERY WINTER, The Hub Restaurant near the busy Panjagutta Cross Roads organises a food festival to offer something spicy for Hyderabadis to beat the chill of the season. And the best of the spread, going by popular orders, is subsequently absorbed into the regular a la carte menu.

As for the restaurant, this is a popular joint known for its soothing ambience that is not overstated — peach upholstery, vibrant frames on the walls, right illumination and pleasant pop music beaming on the World Space radio. This year, the restaurant is organising a `Hyderabadi Food Mela' till December 31, which may probably be extended to January 15, "to coincide with Ramzan, Christmas and Sankranti," says A.V.V. Prasad, managing director, The Hub.

The festival incorporates authentic traditional Hyderabadi preparations. For instance, the menu holds shorbas for appetisers instead of the corn flour-loaded soups. The Mutton shorba, made with mutton stock and flavoured with coriander, is a spicy appetiser. The veggie option is the Dal shorba. The food festival has a leaning towards non-vegetarian preparations, "since the Hyderabadi people mostly prefer non-vegetarian cuisine," says the hotelier.

Once you have settled with the soup, you could order for the main course or opt for some appetising kebabs for starters choosing from Tandoor dawat, Jahangir kebabs or Kebab hara bhara. For the main course, the Hyderabadi chef at the restaurant lines up Bhuna gosht, Nalli ka kurma and Dum ki machchi or the Indian style ginger chicken Adrak Murg or the pickled Achar Murg.

No Hyderabadi food fest can be complete without the biryani. The festival brings over 15 different types of them. Choose from the popular ginger and vegetable Adrak vegetable biryani, the saffron flavoured Jaffrani biryani or the delectable Mughlai Shahjahani biryani. The biryanis look appetising, though slightly spicier when compared to their Irani counterparts popularly available in the twin cities.

Wrap up the spicy fare with the apricot delight Khubani ka meetha topped with a dollop of vanilla or butterscotch ice cream, or with truly Hyderabadi Double ka meetha.

The `Hyderabadi Food Mela' is open for lunch (12 noon-4 p.m.) and dinner (7 p.m.-11 p.m.). Home delivery facility can be availed by residents from surrounding areas like Khairtabad, S.R.
