Scrolls that tell tales

SCROLL PAINTING from Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, is yet another traditional folk art form that is slowly fading into oblivion. Known as Cherial scroll painting, it illustrates the origin of a particular community and tells stories of their heroes. Thus, each community of Telangana has its own stories narrated with the help of dolls and masks.

The colours used in scroll painting are bright, while the materials are biodegradable. And the background is always red.

Nakashi Venkataramaiah's family is perhaps the only family in the Cherial village to pursue this art form. His grandson Nageshwar has carried the tradition forward, by adapting the art to suit contemporary tastes. He has been working closely with DakshinaChitra. Some of the masks, dolls, greeting cards and pen stands made in the Cherial style are available at the Craft Shop.

Now, Chennai-ites have an opportunity to discover the fine details of this folk art at a workshop conducted by Nageshwar from November 21 to 23 at DakshinaChitra, Muttukadu. The fee is Rs. 1,200. Food and transport will be provided.
