Women's day out

IT WAS a show of, by and for women. "Dhamaka 2003" put together by Deep Sakhi, for the third year, aimed at providing "total entertainment" to the participants and the audience. And, the show did live up to the billing.

The idea - to give women a platform to showcase their talents and have fun. The star guest of the evening, actress and dancer Sudha Chandran, arrived a little ahead of schedule, weaving in her way with ease through an unsuspecting audience.

The women realised Ramola Sikand (the character that made her a star) was in their midst only when the title music of the popular soap she stars in was played.

When Sudha came on stage, she received a standing ovation. The show began with a welcome dance, followed by a dazzling dance performance invoking Lord Shiva. "Jodi no.1" was the first contest of the day. "Boogie Woogie", the group dance competition, which had two rounds and a final, also attracted a lot of attention. The saas-bahu show - a beauty contest for mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, predictably hogged the limelight. More than 20 took part in this contest.

Another show stealer was "Kuch kardikhana hai", a dance programme with a difference. The audience too had a lot to cheer for in contests like tongue twisters, best bindi and non-stop nonsense.

The show did not stop with contests. There was even a lucky draw for the audience with prizes ranging from Rs.1,000 to Rs. 5,000.
