WHAT AN impact the teaser ads "breasts to die for" and "thunder thighs" had on Chennai! Protest letters from outraged citizens flooded `Letters to the Editor' columns in newspapers. Thus arrived Prime Roaster (ph: 52074701) at Alwarpet.
Do you need any more to understand the truism, "any publicity is good publicity". This drew the public to Prime Roaster counters. Ambience can be encapsulated in four words, typical fast food joint.
A suggestion for improvement: install more exhaust fans. But one can easily get used to the hot oil smell. Besides, the service is good enough to make one forget minor irritations.
Conscience can be a major problem if you love food. Since a roast is safer than a deep fry, I ordered with abandon. Never mind the few nuggets and drummets that happened to sneak into the list.
On the brighter side, there was the Prime grilled corn (Rs. 29). This is a miss-not item. Tender and well-seasoned, it is a good buy. Coming back to the star of the show, the roast comes in two flavours — golden roast and black pepper. Both are tasty.
The meal deals are pretty neat. For Rs. 99, it is possible to have a filling meal. But in the a la carte section, a single piece of roast costs Rs. 76. Among the hot and cold add-on to the main course, mashed potatoes (Rs. 15) and coleslaw (Rs. 25) make good choices. The potato comes topped with gravy.
Those who can't do without the oil slick, despair not. The chicken story does not end in the grill here. There are fried chicken, nuggets and drummets.
Alas, premium nuggets (Rs. 34 for three pieces) and drummets or chicken wings (Rs. 36 for three) had a bad case of frostbite, owing to too long a stay in the freezer. Another let-down was the soya milk (Rs. 25). It is too diluted to detect any flavour at all.
With all those health experts bent on spoiling fun for the rest of the world, it is difficult to go to a fast food joint without fear. To such Prime Roaster is the answer. You can have the cake and eat it too here.
