Of marine world

Anna Maria Battaglia's engravings are interesting visuals

ANNA MARIA Battaglia is the first Italian artist exhibiting her series of black and white engravings in Hyderabad at Daira Centre for Arts and Culture, Banjara Hills.

The exhibition of engravings was attended by local printmakers of Hyderabad, such as Gowri Shankar, Chippa Sudhakar, Ananthaiah, Bhairu Raghuram, Ch Manohar and Srihari Bholekar. Such exhibitions are necessary as they not only open a new horizon for the visiting artist but also offer novel opportunities for the local artists in terms of new images and concepts.

The art of printing making demands rigorous discipline and precession. And this Italian artist not just displays labour but also interesting visuals in the form of sea shells and other marine life. She then infuses it with other naturalistic elements like palm leaves and fruits. Although print making is a very technical art, it is based upon the finer aspects of an artist's mind and emotion. Art delights the onlooker but gradually the elitist tendencies creep in as the price tags bear ridiculous prices. But there are prints which are affordable too.

Anna Maria Battaglia began her career as an engraver in 1991 when she learnt the art from the Department of Techniques of Engraving from the Academy of Arts, Palermo. The most fascinating aspect of her work is the fantasy she creates with exotic objects of the marine world. Her forte lies in the perfect blending of two to three etching techniques such as intaglio, Aqua fortis, monotype, linocut and other techniques.

The exhibition is on at Daira till October 30, between 11a.m. and 7 p.m.
