Embroidered ART

Different embroidery techniques showcased in the `Shagun' collection made it interesting and colourful

THE ENSEMBLE on display at the Shagun sari sale was refreshingly different. Different due to the intricate and delicate embroidery, done on them by artisans from Bengal and Bihar. Bright crepes, chiffons and georgettes with sequins, resham work; chumki work, Kashmiri stitch and Parsi embroidery turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. The dupattas, saris, unstitched sets, even bed linen, had beautifully embroidered motifs and patterns on them which, made the entire range for one to wear on special occasions.

Tie and Dye fabrics with gota work, sequins, beads, copper and bronze zari work with another range of chikan work kurtas and kurtis with bell sleeves showcasing Lucknowi embroidery, made the display colourful and unique. Shiguli print, a type of dyeing, using needles, on Leheriyas and chunris was another new style on show.

Rachana Jain from Mattancherry, who put her talent and enterprising spirit to effect said, " I sent all the designs, patterns, colour schemes to the artisans in Muzaffarpur and Patna. To co-ordinate over the phone was difficult, but I have managed. A friend of mine in Bihar helped me to put things together. Some of the embroidery has been done in Kolkata and some in Lucknow."

The range was from Rs. 500 to Rs. 3,000, but nothing was ordinary, nothing dull and nothing commonplace. Each piece had a festive air about it, something right for the upcoming season of feasts.
